About Tanks & Tank Specs
The steel tank production starts with the sheets being CNC Plasma cut to length and width using our 100’ three axis plasma cutter. The collar placements and all other attachments are cut out and plasma marked for accuracy. The tanks are then rolled and welded by skilled personnel. Hess Services manufacturing processes incorporate multiple quality inspections during construction. Welds are inspected after initial weld, and tanks are pressure tested to 2.5 psi and inspected for leaks using spray soap solution on welds. All tanks are then steel grit blasted to a SP10 > 95% near white finish on exterior and interior (if coated) surfaces. Welds receive another inspection after steel grit blasting. The tank is then painted and coated to customer’s specifications. All painted and coated surfaces receive a documented quality inspection for mil thickness on interior and exterior surfaces. Hess utilizes specialized high voltage meters called Holiday detectors to sweep the surface on all coated tanks and vessels. This device uses 1.8 Million volts and arcs on any exposed steel surface. A Positector 6000 Dry Film Coating thickness gauge is used on 15 locations throughout the vessel to verify thickness. Target thicknesses in Mil’s is: On paint 6-8, Fastclad Coating 18-22, and Novaplate is 20-25. Dew point and humidity are also checked prior to painting and documented. Our steel tanks are available in all standard and custom sizes.
Our fiberglass tanks are molded on specially built mandrels that allow us to produce a tank with no seams in the bottom or shell, which increases the integrity of the tank tremendously. This method allows for a chemically bonded one piece construction base, which nearly eliminates potential for leaks that occur on a poor mechanical bonding process that takes place when bases are added at a later time after the shell has cured. Our tanks are available in many standard sizes and additional custom sizes are available upon request. Additional types of specialty resins, such as Vinyl ester, which have higher heat and chemical resistance ratings are available for custom chemical storage tanks.
