Thermal Energy Storage Tanks & Pressure Vessels for Data Center Cooling
Thermal energy storage tanks and pressure vessels engineered and manufactured for large-scale data center cooling and thermal management systems.
Thermal Energy Storage for Data Center Cooling
Thermal energy storage (TES) tanks store chilled water so cooling capacity is available when it is needed, allowing a data center cooling plant to manage changing loads, support system stability, and provide additional cooling capacity during periods when normal chiller operation is interrupted or constrained.
In a typical chilled-water TES system, chilled water is produced by the cooling plant and stored in a large insulated tank. The stored cooling capacity can then be supplied to the chilled-water loop when cooling demand increases or additional capacity is needed.
TES projects require coordination between the system engineering team and the tank or vessel manufacturer. Hess works with project engineers to translate established system requirements into practical, manufacturable equipment.
Chilled-Water TES Tanks and Vessels
Chilled-water TES tanks are commonly designed to maintain thermal stratification, with colder water separated from warmer return water within the tank. The transition between these temperature zones is known as the thermocline. The tank geometry, flow conditions, and internal configuration are important considerations in achieving the required thermal performance.
Thermal Stratification & the Thermocline
Thermal stratification allows a chilled-water TES tank to maintain water at different temperatures within the same vessel, with colder water separated from warmer return water. The transition zone between these temperature layers is known as the thermocline.
